A Chinese government agency has developed a way to identify users who send messages via the AirDrop function from Apple, according to the Beijing government, as part of efforts to root out objectionable content.
A Beijing institute has developed a technique to hack an iPhone's encrypted log to identify the numbers and email addresses of senders sharing content via AirDrop, the city's judicial bureau said. Police identified several suspects using this method, without disclosing whether anyone was arrested, Bloomberg reports.
This improves the efficiency and accuracy of solving cases and prevents the spread of inappropriate speech and potential bad influence.
– noted in the bureau.
The declaration brought renewed attention to a feature of the iPhone that activists around the world use to spread their messages. The feature, which only requires a nearby Bluetooth connection, was widely used by protesters to spread pro-democracy slogans during the 2019 Hong Kong protests.
This method, called a “technological breakthrough” in the article, could complement measures aimed at eradicating information that China considers harmful. It also adds more uncertainty to Apple's operations in a country where it already faces tight restrictions on content, including on Apple TV and Books.
AirDrop allows you to quickly share files such as images, documents or videos between Apple devices. The company has limited the feature on Chinese iPhones starting in 2022 after the service was used by protesters to distribute images to other device owners.
