However, there is no risk of a real collision
In the coming days, according to NASA, a giant asteroid will approach Earth as close as possible. The asteroid labeled 2008 OS7 will fly past Earth on February 2, 2024 at a distance of 2,850,000 km.
According to NASA's Asteroid Observation page, the asteroid's diameter is between 210 and 480 meters, which is the size of a sports stadium.
Such an asteroid, due to its size and proximity to Earth, belongs to the category of potentially dangerous. However, there is no risk of a real collision. 2008 OS7 will not crash into the Earth or enter the atmosphere during its flyby.
The Taipei Planetarium said that in fact, potentially dangerous asteroids approach the Earth every year more often than everyone thinks. Only in 2024 there will be 18 — they will pass within 0.05 astronomical units of Earth (7.5 million km).
