Tesla humanoid robot demos usually look impressive on video, but this one since Internet users revealed the secret of the promo, testifying that the “Optimus” is still far from being autonomous.

In a video posted by Elon Musk on X, Optimus folds a shirt and appears to be quite competent at the task – except for one thing. The most attentive viewers noticed a gloved hand in the lower right corner of the video, which indicated that the robot in this task is acting more like a puppet than an autonomous system, simply copying the movements of a nearby person.
This technique is not new, and has been around since the 1960s – a similar one was used by Disney at the New York World's Fair for a robotic Abraham Lincoln, who stood up, moved his limbs and made a speech. In fact, all these actions were programmed through a person, whom the robot repeated after.

“Important note: Optimus can't do this standalone yet, but will certainly be able to do it in a random environment (won't need a fixed desk with a box containing only one shirt).”< /p>
It's been a little over two years since Elon Musk announced that Tesla had begun moving towards developing humanoid robots. The company launched prototypes pretty quickly – and so far we've seen one barely moving assembled model and another that stood on a stand and waved to onlookers. At the same time, in the promo that followed the presentation, the robots walked and interacted with the environment more confidently.
In December, Tesla (also still only in promo) introduced its second generation of robots – it was reported that Optimus received two degrees of freedom in the neck, integrated electronics and wiring, as well as more human-shaped legs with articulated toes and torque sensors. The robot's arms are equipped with 11 degrees of freedom, faster actuators and tactile sensors on all fingers to manipulate objects (the skill was demonstrated on video on chicken eggs).
The new white body, meanwhile, already resembles the Model S – while the previous metal one was closer to the Cybertruck. The robot is also 10% lighter and 30% faster, the company says.
The preliminary announced cost of the model is $20,000.
