At the beginning of the month, the service encountered a 24-hour outage – allegedly due to for “botnet activity” of two accounts associated with a competitor company Stability AI.
March 2 Midjourney reported on its Discord server about a long-term outage, which was allegedly behind “botnet activity”
A botnet is a computer network consisting of a number of hosts running bots—autonomous software. Most often, a bot in a botnet is a program that is hiddenly installed on the victim’s computer and allows the attacker to perform certain actions using the resources of the infected computer. Typically used for illegal activities – sending spam, brute-forcing passwords on a remote system, denial of service attacks, obtaining personal information about users, stealing credit card numbers and access passwords. Caused by employees of Stability AI (creator of the Stable Diffusion neural network):
“Someone from Stability AI tried to steal all the clues and image pairs in the middle of the night on Saturday,” The Verge quotes the company as saying.
As a result, Midjourney blocked all Stability AI employees from using its service “indefinitely.” The company is also introducing a new policy that prohibits the use of its neural network by employees of any company that implements “aggressive automation” or causes service disruptions.
Stability AI CEO Emad Mostak wrote on X that he did not instruct employees to perform such actions and is now investigating the situation. He also added that if the failure was caused by Stability employees, it “was unintentional and obviously not a DDoS attack.” Midjourney founder David Holtz wrote to Mostak in the same thread, sending “some information” to help with the internal investigation.
