«Киевстар» запустил домашний интернет GPON в Днепре — на очереди еще 7 городов

Kyivstar is gradually rebuilding its own optical Internet network – with another city, where GPON coverage appeared, Dnepr became. So far, the connection is available only to business clients: a little more than 10 locations are now connected – office and shopping center, industrial facilities.

The technology of passive optical networks itself, which we wrote a lot about in anticipation of new blackouts, is by no means new, but massive attacks on the energy infrastructure of Ukraine by Russian drones and missiles greatly accelerated the implementation of the technology by Ukrainian Internet providers. Among the leaders in terms of the pace of transition and implementation of xPON, if we talk about the largest Internet providers, are Ukrtelecom, Vodafone Ukraine, which previously absorbed Freenet (O3) and Vega, as well as Lanet. But Kyivstar is still lagging behind in this direction.

Kyivstar began developing its own GPON network in November 2023 – a few days before the sensational cyber attack on December 12, which cost the company almost $100 million. GPON differs from other optical connections in its cost-effectiveness and efficiency due to the use of passive components , which do not require power supply.

To connect home Internet via fiber optic, you will need a special ONU terminal that converts the optical fiber signal into an electrical signal, and vice versa. Until March 31, 2024, the company will provide new ONU subscribers with terminals free of charge—you can use your own if you wish. By the way, 2-in-1 solutions are available for sale (Wi-Fi router + ONU).

Kyivstar plans to expand GPON coverage to another 7 cities by the end of March 2024 (the website mentions Vinnytsia, Lviv, Cherkassy, Khmelnytsky and Ternopil regions). Using this technology, the company will offer services such as fixed Home Internet, data transfer, telephony; at speeds of 20 Mbps, 50 Mbps and 100 Mbps. The range of services and connection conditions are expected to expand evenly.

Those interested can leave a request for connection on the official website – recently the company has once again updated the tariffs, and now the cost of Home Internet starts from 200 UAH/month, and the cost of tariffs of the line ALL TOGETHER with Home Internet, mobile communications and Kyivstar TV – from 330 UAH/month. We talked about the new tariffs in more detail in a separate news.
