Intel today announces a full line of 14th generation processors for mobile and desktop computers, including the latest HX series mobile processors that will power gaming laptops in 2024. Not to be confused with Intel Core Ultra processors for laptops, the 14th generation variants are an upgrade from the 13th generation Raptor Lake mobile versions.
The flagship Intel Core i9-14900HX will be available in more demanding gaming laptops, equipped with 24 cores (eight performance and 16 efficiency cores) and a turbo boost of up to 5.8 GHz. These new chips also support up to 192 GB of DDR5-5600 RAM, as well as discrete Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4 and Thunderbolt 5, reports The Verge.
As in the desktop versions, Intel increases the number of cores in the Core i7 variant. The Core i7-14700HX processor now comes with 20 cores (eight performance cores and 12 efficiency cores). This is four more productive cores than the 13th generation Core i7 model, and should improve the performance of multi-threaded applications and games.
Intel decided to compare its latest Core i9-14900HX with AMD's Ryzen 9 7945HX, the first mobile processor with AMD's 3D V-Cache. At 1080p, the i9-14900HX beats the 7945HX in most Intel tests, with the exception of Horizon Zero Dawn, Cyberpunk 2077, and Red Dead Redemption 2. However, Intel did not offer any comparisons with the 13th generation chips.
Intel is also launching major 14th generation desktop processors. Eighteen new processors will be available, including the flagship $549 Core i9-14900 processor with 24 cores (eight performance/16 efficiency). These are lower-power 14th generation desktop processors that run at a base power of 65W, with the Core i9 model consuming up to 219W.
Like the K variant, the Core i7-14700 has 20 cores (8 performance/12 efficiency). The top-end Core i5, i7 and i9 chips support up to DDR5-5600 and 192GB of memory, and are all compatible with current Intel 600 and 700 series motherboards.
