In Frank Herbert's 1965 science fiction novel Dune, travelers through the deserts of the planet The Arrakis wear a stillsuit, a suit that turns wet body fluids into drinkable water, which is dispensed through a tube. YouTube channel The Hacksmith tried to recreate this costume, and not without success.
Despite the fact that the homemade stillsuit is not as attractive in appearance as in the movie “Dune”, the engineers managed to collect body moisture, which one of the YouTubers Darryl Sherk drank through a tube. The team used a thermoelectric cooler, a small mesh device to cool computers and other devices by passing an electrical charge through two different metal materials. The cold side of the device remained inside the suit and moisture condensed on it. A water bladder along with a built-in water filter purchased from a local sporting goods store collected the resulting water.
The device surprised people around The Hacksmith office: “Everyone thinks I drink my own urine,” Sherk complained in the video.
Of course, this is far from an ideal solution, which probably will not allow you to survive long on the surface of Arrakis. But Dune takes place about 20,000 years later—enough time for technology to improve. But The Hacksmith costume, put together in one day, is an amazing proof of concept.
