The authorities of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein transferred 30 thousand civil servants from the operating system Microsoft Windows on Linux.
This was reported by the publication «ArsTekhnika».
It is noted that the government has finally completed the pilot launch of LibreOffice and is now officially migrating all government employees to the new operating system and new software.
Plans to switch to Linux were announced in 2021. Then local authorities announced that they were testing LibreOffice for two years.
“The Landtag has decided to move from proprietary software to free and open source systems,” said Schleswig-Holstein Prime Minister Daniel Günther.

Why Linux?
There are many reasons to switch to Linux. Among the benefits of switching to open source software, officials cited greater security, cost efficiency and the ability to coordinate between different systems.
In particular, one of the regional ministers, Jan Philipp Albrecht, stated that Linux does not have such great software requirements.
In addition, the Germans pointed to their dependence on cloud services, noting that proprietary software could provide greater data privacy.
It will also help the state budget: the creation of new systems will provide many jobs at the local level. Well, you won’t have to pay for licensed software.
Officials will abandon Microsoft Sharepoint and Exchange/Outlook in favor of Nextcloud and Open-Xchange.

Also in development are open source services that should replace Microsoft Active Directory.
The government of Schleswig-Holstein is now promoting the idea of digital sovereignty, the importance of which is compared to energy sovereignty.
“Open source simply offers us more flexibility,” — officials said.
Note that as of the end of February 2024, Linux's share of the desktop operating system market exceeded 4%.
At first glance, this figure may seem modest, but it took Linux 30 years to secure 3%. This milestone was reached last June.
