The last stage will be completed by the end of the year, the total weight of the concrete fence will be 429 tons
In Seversk, Tomsk Region, at the construction site of the BREST-OD-300 reactor, the second stage of construction of the enclosing structure has been completed: its middle tier has already been installed in the reactor shaft. The weight of the installed block is 184 tons, and the reactor enclosing structure will consist of three blocks with a total weight of 429 tons.
Currently, 312 tons of the enclosing structure have been installed, and the third enlarged unit is planned to be installed in the reactor shaft in December 2024. As a result, the height of the structure will be 17 meters, and the cavity will be filled with special, heat-resistant concrete, providing strength to the metal-concrete frame of the housing, inside which the BREST-OD-300 reactor will operate.
«Reactor of the future» BREST-OD-300 with fast neutrons is part of the Experimental Demonstration Energy Complex, which will use a closed nuclear fuel cycle. Such a complex, in addition to the reactor, includes modules for the production of mixed nitride uranium-plutonium nuclear fuel and the reprocessing of irradiated fuel.
Such a system will allow generating electricity without accumulating irradiated nuclear fuel and repeatedly reusing spent fuel. Rosatom says that such a project is being implemented for the first time in the world. The physical launch of the innovative reactor is planned for 2026, and inclusion in the power grid — for the first half of 2027. Previously, Rosatom received a license to produce nuclear fuel for the BREST-OD-300 reactor.
