Previously, the bipedal robot demonstrated its walking, jumping and even some elements of parkour, and now he has shown the ability to “grab and carry” things – in particular, heavy automobile parts.
In a new video released by Boston Dynamics, the humanoid robot Atlas successfully lifts and carries a car shock absorber, showing if not ready then close to potential commercial use.
The previous version of the Atlas had somewhat rudimentary hand grips, which the latest iteration has made more subtle, with longer fingers that can bend in both directions, as well as knuckles and anchor points on each of the palms. Now the robot can carefully grasp the object without damaging it.
There's also a point in the video where we're shown Atlas' vision with a perfect 3D scan of the part that needs to be transferred – so it looks like some of the clever elements in the presentation were pre-calculated after all.
The engineering company Boston Dynamics was founded three decades ago as a division of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Now it is owned by Hyundai and is known for its developments commissioned by DARPA. Boston Dynamics' most famous products are four-legged robot dogs. In October 2022, the company signed an agreement in which it pledged not to use its robots as weapons.
