Audi abandons its confusing car naming scheme

Two-digit combinations will become a thing of the past

Audi confused fans in 2017 when it introduced a two-digit naming scheme for its entire lineup. Terminology is based on power: from «30» for cars with a power of 109-128 horsepower up to «70» for vehicles with a power of at least 536 hp. The two-digit combination appears next to the usual icons such as TFSI, TDI and Quattro. Seven years later, the company decided to move away from these designations.

The first model to feature the new naming system is the previously announced 2025 Audi Q6 E-Tron. Florian Hauser, Audi's head of sales and marketing for battery electric vehicles, told Auto Express that the company no longer needs to provide numbers.< /p>

Audi aims to simplify its model offerings. The regular Q6 with all-wheel drive is called the Q6 E-Tron Quattro, while the more powerful — SQ6 E-Tron. The future rear-wheel drive variant will be called the Q6 E-Tron.

Not only electric vehicles will adopt a simplified naming scheme — petrol and diesel cars are sure to follow suit. Audi has announced that the two-digit combination will be removed from the trunk lids and rear doors of internal combustion engine vehicles.

A year ago, former Audi CEO Markus Duesmann confirmed that the A4 would be renamed A5 in the next generation, just as the A6 would be renamed A7.
