An HP engineer explained why laptop manufacturers prefer to solder RAM on the motherboard

by alex

Four advantages of this solution for two disadvantages

If earlier laptop manufacturers soldered RAM on the motherboard mainly in thin and light models (ultrabooks), now this practice has spread to powerful gaming models, the case of which is quite capable of accommodating a couple of slots for RAM modules. So, there are no slots for RAM in the new ROG Zephyrus G14, Dell XPS 14 and XPS 16, as well as many other models. Why manufacturers do this? Haval Othman, senior director of engineering at HP, takes it upon himself to explain.

He highlighted four advantages of integrated RAM:

  • Saving space inside the case;
  • Reducing production costs and simplifying production processes;
  • Speed and efficiency (of the memory itself);
  • Increasing the strength of the installation of elements and the structure itself.
