The US General Services Administration (GSA) is now auctioning off a decommissioned supercomputer with 8064 Intel Xeon chips with a performance of 5.34 Petaflops. Although the starting price was only $2500, the bid has already exceeded $280 thousand.
The Cheyenne supercomputer operated at the NCAR-Wyoming Computer Center from January 2017 to December 2023 and was the 20th most powerful computer in the world at the time of its commissioning. According to Wikipedia, it was still ranked 160th in power as of last November.
The computer has 8064 Intel Xeon E5-2697v4 processors with 18 cores each, which operate at up to 3.6 GHz and a TDP of 145 W. In total, 145,152 processing cores are combined with 313,344 GB of DDR4-2400 RAM. However, GSA warns that over 7 years of operation, “approximately 1% of nodes experienced failure … mainly due to DIMMs with ECC errors that will remain uncorrected.”
There are a few other small factors to consider as well. Firstly, it does not come with fiber optic and CAT5/6 cables, which may add additional costs. The auction organizers also warn about transportation safety:
“Moving this system requires hiring a professional moving company. Due to the significant weight of the racks, experienced movers are required, equipped with appropriate professional safety equipment to ensure safe handling. Buyer assumes responsibility for moving racks from site to trucks using their equipment.”
The water cooling system was also removed from the computer – it seemed to have some problems “due to faulty quick disconnects causing water splashing.” However, it does come with some used PGW coolant. Therefore, to establish the operation of the supercomputer, repairs will be required, as well as additional space for CO due to its significant volumes.
