Chinese scientists have introduced a new generation of electromagnetic catapults for launching carrier-based aircraft from aircraft carriers. This solution makes it possible to increase the payload of aircraft. The operating principle of the developed system is similar to the operation of electric vehicles.
The South China Morning Post provides the following information: «The new catapult is small in size, has a simple design, weighs little and does not require a complex power system».
The new catapult can accelerate a 30-ton aircraft from rest to 70 m/s in 2.1 seconds. At the same time, traditional catapults can accelerate a 13-ton aircraft to 66 m/s in more than 3 seconds. In addition, the new generation catapult can stop an aircraft moving at a speed of 72 m/s in 2.6 seconds.
South China Morning Post draws parallels with electric vehicles, as well as the energy recovery effect. The device spins a heavy flywheel to high speeds, and then transfers kinetic energy to a winding wheel, which pulls a steel cable attached to the aircraft's landing gear, giving the fighter the necessary speed.
