The “damn force majeure” that Elon Musk spoke about did not allow Tesla to sell 2 million cars a year. Analysts think so

According to the forecast, the company sold 1.82 million cars

Tesla, according to Reuters, will announce another record quarter for electric vehicle deliveries, but will likely fall short of the ambitious internal target of 2 million units per year that CEO Elon Musk announced earlier.

Faced with slowing sales, Tesla took advantage of its industry-leading profits to cut prices on its four car models globally in 2023, with a particular focus on China, where the company has lost market share to local players including BYD.

However, a price war and slowing demand for electric vehicles have prompted automakers including Ford Motor to abandon their electrification plans, leaving Tesla as the undisputed leader in the United States. And its shares have more than doubled this year.

«The fourth quarter is typically the strongest of the year in terms of Tesla deliveries, we expect that to be the case again this year», — said Garrett Nelson, senior analyst at CFRA Research.

Tesla is likely to deliver 1.82 million vehicles worldwide in 2023, up 37% from 2022, according to 14 analysts surveyed by LSEG. However, about 473,000 units were delivered in the fourth quarter. The electric vehicle maker is expected to report quarterly deliveries and production as soon as Tuesday, January 2.

In January 2023, Musk said that Tesla has the potential to reach 2 million deliveries this year, barring a «damn force majeure».
