Samsung has repeatedly faced criticism regarding the excessive efforts of artificial intelligence in photo processing – for example, when the image of the Moon looked too artificial when using the Scene Optimizer function, or when a baby suddenly showed a Hollywood smile when activating the Remaster tool.
In a recent interview with Techradar, Samsung Vice President Patrick Chomet defended the photo processing process on the company's smartphones:
“Last year there was a good video by Marcus Brownlee about lunar imaging. Everyone was debating whether it was a fake or a real picture. And the real image doesn't actually exist. You have sensors to capture something or reproduce what you see. You can say it's a real image, but if you used artificial intelligence to optimize zoom, autofocus, the scene – it's reality? Or filters? There's no real image, period.”
Companies like Apple, Google and Samsung are increasingly combining multiple images to create the best one, but with the rise of artificial intelligence, efforts to “complete” reality will only increase (Samsung’s new Galaxy S24 and S24 Ultra – last example).
At the same time, Chomet says Samsung's strategy is to give consumers a choice: a way to capture a “moment” and a way to create a “new reality.” Both use AI, he said, but the latter's results are watermarked and metadataed to make sure people understand the difference.
Chomet also noted the need to regulate the AI industry, which Samsung “plans to help with.”
