According to analyst company IDC, global tablet shipments in the fourth quarter of 2023 reached 36.8 million units (17.4% less than in the corresponding period last year). Meanwhile, annual figures showed a decline of 20.5% to 128.5 million units.
Given that the world is facing high inflation and job losses, these numbers look quite expected.
“Project delays and cost freezes have also delayed procurement,” says Anuropa Nataraj, senior research analyst at IDC's Mobility and Consumer Devices Tracking practice. “2024 is expected to show some scope for recovery, provided it is more economically viable. However, overall challenges remain, and technological progress around AI will likely focus more on PCs and smartphones over the next 2 years.”
In addition to 2023 being a bad year for the tablet market overall, it was also notably bad for Apple, which lost about 7% market share after its fourth-quarter shipments fell from 21.1 million to 14.9 million. Its main competitors Samsung, Huawei, Lenovo and Xiaomi, on the contrary, increased their market share, while the “Others” category decreased, but by less than 2%.
