Meta's generative artificial intelligence tends to create images of people of the same race, even if it was clearly stated otherwise. For example, for the queries “Asian and Caucasian friend” or “Asian and Caucasian wife”, the image generator produces images of people of the same race.
This problem was discovered by journalists from The Verge, and subsequently confirmed by Engadget. During testing of the web image generator Meta, queries for “Asian with a white girlfriend” or “Asian with a white wife” generated images of Asian couples. When asked for a “diverse group of people,” AI tool Meta created a grid of nine faces of white people and one person of color. There were a few cases where it produced one result that correctly displayed the query, but in most cases it was unable to accurately display the specified query.
According to The Verge, there are other more subtle signs of Meta AI bias. For example, the generated images tend to show Asian men as older and Asian women as younger. The image generator also sometimes added “special cultural clothing” even if it was not part of the entered text.
It is unclear why Meta's generative AI resists direct requests. The company has not yet commented on the situation, but previously described Meta AI as a “beta version” and therefore may not work properly.
This isn't the first generative AI model to create images of people in strange ways. Google recently suspended the ability to create images of people using Gemini following diversity bugs. Google later explained that its internal precautions did not account for situations where various results were inconsistent.
