Access to satellite communications from regular smartphones: hybrid networks will be tested in Russia

If the cellular signal is weak, the smartphone can switch to satellite

The State Commission for Radio Frequencies (SCRF) received the first application for the allocation of bands for hybrid communication networks. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Communications of the Russian Federation (Ministry of Digital Development of Russia) following the results of the last meeting of the SCRF.

The Ministry of Digital Development said:

The SCRF received an application from MTS to allocate bands in the range of 1920–1980/2110–2170 MHz for testing hybrid communication networks. Such networks make it possible to combine ground stations and satellite channels based on a single standard for operation on mobile devices. Where signal reception from terrestrial networks will be difficult (in remote settlements, mountains, etc.), a smartphone or tablet can switch to satellite. This is the first step to test hybrid network technologies in Russia.

By decision of the SCRF, a working group will be created to study the bands that can be allocated for the creation of such networks and clarify the order of their allocation.
