Russian banks prevented fraudulent transactions worth almost 1.7 trillion rubles in just three months

Fraud activity increased in July-September

The press service of the Bank of Russia shared interesting statistics in the “Review of reporting of information security incidents during the transfer of funds.” In the third quarter of 2023, Russian banks repelled 10.8 million attacks on their customer accounts.

For comparison, in the second quarter, 6.6 million attacks were repelled. Thus, banks prevented fraudulent transactions amounting to almost 1.7 trillion rubles.

As noted by the Central Bank, the activity of fraudsters increased in July-September. They managed to successfully carry out 288.8 thousand transactions without the consent of clients. This is 23% more than the average for the previous four quarters.

At the same time, the damage to citizens from the actions of fraudsters compared to the corresponding period, on the contrary, decreased by 11.3% and amounted to 3.6 billion rubles.

In July-September, 141.8 thousand telephone numbers were blocked, which were used to deceive people. One of the most popular schemes among scammers remains calls and letters on behalf of Bank of Russia employees, including through instant messengers. Over the eight months of this year, the Central Bank received 24.5 thousand questions and requests from people who faced a similar problem.
