An English businessman has filed a lawsuit against Apple: his wife found “deleted” messages on the family iMac and filed for divorce. This is not surprising – the messages were addressed to sex workers.
The plaintiff claims that Apple failed to inform users that deleting messages on one device does not delete it from all linked devices. The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, used iMessage to communicate with sex workers and believed that he had permanently erased the messages from his iPhone.
However, the messages were still available on the iMac due to syncing with an Apple ID. The businessman claims that Apple failed to inform users that deleting a message on one device does not delete it from all associated devices.
“If you are told that a message has been deleted, you have the right to assume that it has been deleted,” says the plaintiff.
The discovery of these messages prompted his wife to file for divorce, which cost him more than £5 million. Describing the divorce as painful and difficult, he believes that more rational conversation could have saved his marriage if the messages had not been discovered so cruelly.
The businessman is demanding £5 million from Apple and aims to turn his lawsuit against Apple into a class action lawsuit for those who have encountered similar problems. He claims that a lack of clarity regarding the deletion of messages led to this situation.

The plaintiff suggested that clearer messages from Apple, such as “These messages are deleted only on this device,” could have prevented this misunderstanding. His lawyer Simon Walton says:
“Apple has not explained to users what happens to the messages they send, receive, and, importantly, delete.”
Walton stressed that the iPhone tells users that “messages have been deleted,” which he said is misleading because they can still be found on other linked devices. He wants to hear from other Apple customers who have encountered similar problems.
