BYD was in the lead for almost a year

In January 2024, the German company Volkswagen became the leader in car sales in China, as CarNewsChina writes with reference to the China Passenger Car Association.

Volkswagen managed to get ahead of the Chinese concern BYD, which previously held first place for 11 months. In January, Volkswagen sold 209.5 thousand cars, which amounted to 10.29% of the market share. BYD took second place with sales of 191.1 thousand vehicles. Toyota took third place with a result of 141.7 thousand units sold.

The most popular models on the Chinese market in January were Changan CS75 Plus (50,494 units), Volkswagen Lavida (32,419 units) and BYD Song Plus (32,267 units). The top ten also included Nissan Sylphy, Aito Wenjie M7, Tesla Model Y, BYD Qin Plus, BYD Seagull, Volkswagen Sagitar and Honda CR-V.

Total sales of new passenger cars in China in January 2024 amounted to 2.04 million units, which exceeded last year's figures by 57.4%. The share of electric and hybrid cars amounted to 33.8% of the total volume.
