Production lines have already been built
SMIC may begin producing 5 nm chips for Huawei this year.
SMIC has reportedly already built new lines at its Shanghai factory to produce such products. As previously reported, SMIC will use its existing non-EUV (deep ultraviolet photolithography) equipment for this purpose. Because of this, the corresponding chips can be quite expensive, but Huawei simply has no choice.
Taking into account the parameters and performance of the Kirin 9000s, it is likely that the new platform will also lag very far behind the current top-end SoCs from Qualcomm, MediaTek and Samsung. But sales of the Mate 60 line showed that this is not critical for Chinese consumers.
