Unexpected convertible from Toyota unveiled

It is based on the crossover Crown

Toyota does not produce convertibles, but after the Toyota Century Convertible SUV, created for sumo wrestling champions, the automaker introduced another unique convertible in Japan, this time based on the Crown crossover.

The Crown Convertible first appeared in an official Toyota Times video. The lower body is taken from the original Crown crossover, but the roof and pillars are eliminated. The resulting convertible retained the four doors of the donor car. The rear has been redesigned with a special black finish to compensate for the lack of rear window.

The five-seat interior with light upholstery remains the same. It is interesting that this convertible did not even have a folded roof, so it can only be used comfortably in good weather.

There are no details on technical specifications, so we can assume that the model is equipped with a standard hybrid setup. It includes a 2.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine and two electric motors, providing a total power of up to 344 hp, as in the Crown Crossover RS.

The conversion was carried out by Toyota's own engineers, who were responsible for the high level of quality and attention to detail. Toyota Vice President Hiroki Nakajima admitted that convertibles are «extremely complex» produce, but their style and open-air feel make them popular among people in the US and other countries.

Toyota design chief Simon Humphreys said it was important for convertibles to look «sophisticated and beautiful».
