No performance increase for CPU

Intel has finally introduced Meteor Lake processors. Today we have already seen some of the slides from the presentation, but now all the cards are revealed. 

Let's start with the basics. Meteor Lake — the first all-new Intel processors in several years. Everything is new: the architecture of large (Redwood Cove) and small (Crestmont) processor cores, iGPU architecture (Xe-LPG), technical processes, design, and so on.

At the same time, Meteor Lake, firstly, exists only in the form of mobile CPUs, and secondly, only in the segment of models with TDP from 9 to 45 W, that is, there are simply no high-performance processors in the line, yes and in general there are only two categories: Meteor Lake-U and Meteor Lake-H. 

If we talk about technical processes, everything here is more interesting than previously thought. The processor design includes four chiplets, or tiles, as Intel itself calls them.

The processor tile is manufactured by Intel itself using the Intel 4 process technology. The iGPU tile is manufactured by TSMC according to 5 nm (N5) standards. The SoC tile and I/O tile are also manufactured by TSMC, but using the N6 process technology. That is, three out of four chiplets are not produced by Intel at all. In addition, not the most modern technical processes are used, because the Ryzen 7040 also produces TSCM, but using a 4-nanometer technical process. Intel also makes the 3D Foveros Base Die, but using some old Intel 16 process.

If we are talking about parameters and models, then we have 11 models, three of which will be released only in the next quarter. Almost all of the new CPUs fall into two categories: 28-watt or 15-watt. But next year we will have a single 45-watt Core Ultra 9 185H and two 9-watt ones: Core Ultra 5 134U and Core Ultra 7 164U. By the way, the naming principle of the new CPUs is such that the average user will definitely not understand that the Core Ultra 5 125U will be faster than the Core Ultra 7 164U.

It’s worth mentioning separately about the LE E-Cores. These are small cores, but located not in the processor tile, but in the SoC tile. All CPUs have two such cores, and it is now clear that Intel counts them when indicating the total number of cores. But it is still unclear how these cores will work: always or in some separate modes, when the entire load will be on them only.

Speaking of performance, Intel confirms all the recent leaks: Meteor Lake does not bring any significant increase over Alder Lake and Raptor Lake with the same number of cores, if we are talking about the CPU. Yes, the new processors should be much more power efficient, but in terms of performance there won't be much of a difference. According to Intel's slides, the Core Ultra 7 165H is only marginally faster than the Core i7-1370P with the same number of cores and TDP, and single-threaded performance is even lower! And if the difference in power consumption is not significant, big questions will arise for Intel. There is also no significant increase relative to the Ryzen 7040U. 

If we talk about iGPU, then everything is better here. Yes, in comparison with the same Ryzen, the increase on average is not very large, although in some games it is huge, but in comparison with Raptor Lake we are talking about an increase of up to two times. 

Also, Meteor Lake for the first time for Intel processors received a hardware unit for working with AI. The total performance is estimated at 34 TOPS, but so far there is simply no place where the average user can use all this. 

Of the rest, we can note support for Wi-Fi 7, AV1 encoder, HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 2.1, Thunderbolt 4 and LPDDR5x-7467 memory, but such fast memory will not be supported by 9-watt models. 

Meteor Lake-based laptops go on sale today.
