The box is called Gazoo Racing Direct Automatic Transmission
Toyota presented a new «charged» hatchback Toyota GR Yaris, which received a powerful turbocharged engine, an upgraded driver's seat, permanent all-wheel drive, a more rigid body, reinforced suspension and a new automatic transmission.
Like Hyundai with the i30 N, the GR Yaris was originally available exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission and now has an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission added to the line-up. Unlike Hyundai, Toyota did not opt for a dual-clutch system, but instead developed a new single-clutch transmission that it called Gazoo Racing Direct Automatic Transmission. It is designed for fast gear changes in competition.
When developing the new unit, Toyota focused on achieving the highest possible downshift speed. Using an automatic transmission gears also allows the driver to concentrate more on steering and using the brake and gas pedals.
Cars with the new automatic transmission are equipped with a special radiator, and a pair of plastic paddle shifters are installed behind the steering wheel. Although the automatic transmission adds about 18 kg to the GR Yaris, it should help improve acceleration from a standstill. The automatic model will be more generously equipped with forged wheels and a premium JBL audio system
Toyota said a number of modifications have also been made to the GR Yaris' 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine. The automaker increased the injection pressure, installed a new intake air pressure sensor, new lightweight pistons and added another intake air pressure sensor. The engine produces 300 hp. at 6500 rpm and torque of 400 N·m in the range from 3250 to 4600 rpm, which is significantly higher than the previous model with 268 hp. and torque 370 N·m.
The design of the GR Yaris has also changed. The changes start at the front, where there is a new bumper with distinctive air intakes, and at the rear there are different LED taillights with a light strip.
There are changes in the interior too: the most obvious is the new dashboard with a 12.3-inch screen, like the GR Corolla. The infotainment system display has been moved and tilted 15 degrees towards the driver. The driver's seat is 25mm lower than before. The body length of the Toyota GR Yaris is 3995 mm, width — 1805 mm, and height — 1455 mm with a wheelbase of 2560 mm.
The new GR Yaris will be available in the UK and across Europe from summer 2024.
