Toyota is set to release the powerful Crown crossover through its Gazoo Racing (GR) division, as reported by Japanese media.
Toyota is in the process of developing a new Toyota GR Crown model, which will potentially be the first in the line to include a self-charging hybrid powertrain.
Carscoops published the first renderings of the model, which show a lowered version of the crossover with a powerful set of new alloy wheels and a rather aggressive body kit. This sporty upgrade transforms the Crown from a crossover into a sleeker, fastback sedan.
The cabin is expected to feature a dark theme with red stitching contrasting with black upholstery. The front seats will be reinforced with lateral support, and GR emblems will be added throughout the cabin.
According to information obtained by Japan's Best Car, the Toyota GR Crown will be equipped with a more powerful hybrid powertrain with all-wheel drive. The powertrain will include an upgraded version of the 2.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 296bhp, up from 268bhp. for the standard model. With the dual electric motors, battery and eCVT transmission retained, combined output could potentially reach or even surpass the 375 hp mark. For comparison, the Crown Crossover RS with the optional Hybrid Max transmission currently produces 344 hp
In addition to power, there are mentions of chassis improvements that Toyota GR engineers are said to be working on. These include an updated suspension configuration, additional bracing, improved brakes and more responsive steering.
