Danish regulator opposes Google's policy that allows student data to be used on Chromebooks and Google Workplace for Education, even if they are not used for ad targeting.
Danish privacy regulator Datatilsysnet has ruled that Danish cities need significantly greater privacy protections for Google services that could expose children's data, BleepingComputer reports, citing the decision.
The agency found that Google was using student data from Chromebooks and Google Workplace for Education “for its own purposes,” in flagrant violation of European privacy laws. By March 1, municipalities (read: city governments) must provide a clear explanation of exactly what measures they plan to implement to comply with the order to stop sharing data with Google. Otherwise, teachers must completely stop using Chromebooks starting August 1.
The regulator has ruled that municipalities cannot send data to Google until laws change or Google provides the ability to filter student information. Google's language about using data for purposes such as analyzing performance or developing new features is a problem in their minds, even if targeted advertising is not included. It's likely that regulators see risks in using student data to develop and improve the artificial intelligence features that are increasingly becoming part of Google Workspace and Chromebooks.
Previously, Datatilsysnet concluded that permission to use Google Workspace for Education in local schools was issued prematurely, and cities actually provided little attention to risk assessment. In 2022, the commission required 53 municipalities to reassess to lift the previous data sharing ban for the city of Helsingor. One of the requirements of the “recertification” process, which resulted in a new order with a potential ban, was to provide information on how Google uses the collected information about students and where it sends this data.
