There is already a supercomputer based on it
China is quite actively developing its own processors, and for different segments. Sunway SW26010 Pro is probably one of the most impressive.
This is a server processor, which is the older brother of the Sunway SW26010 CPU, released back in 2016.
Like its predecessor, the new processor is based on the RISC architecture. And if the old processor had 260 cores, then the new one already has 384! Moreover, the creators of the CPU managed to significantly increase performance when calculating with double precision (FP64). It is worth saying that in fact, these processors appeared back in 2021, and even then a supercomputer was built on their basis, and even one of the most powerful in the world. But only now the developers have demonstrated the CPUs themselves and revealed more characteristics.
The SW26010 Pro includes six Core Groups (CGs) and a Protocol Processing Unit (PPU). Each CG integrates 64 computational processing elements (CPEs) with a 512-bit vector engine, along with 256 KB of fast data cache and 16 KB of instruction cache; one control processing element (MPE), which is a superscalar out-of-order core with a vector engine, 32 KB instruction cache and the same amount of L1 cache, 256 KB L2 cache and a 128-bit DDR4-3200 memory interface.
All this operates at a frequency of 2.5 GHz versus 1.45 GHz for its predecessor. The technical process and power consumption are unknown.
Performance reaches 27.6 TFLOPS (FP32) and 13.8 TFLOPS (FP64). For comparison, the latest 96-core Epyc 9654 is about 5.4 TFLOPS at double precision.
By the way, in 2016, the Top500 supercomputer rating was topped by the Sunway TaihuLight system based on SW26010 processors. At that time, the most powerful supercomputer in the world offered performance of 93 PFLOPS. Only seven years have passed, and the most powerful supercomputer in the world is more than an order of magnitude higher than this figure, Sunway TaihuLight has dropped to 11th place.
