Square Enix, as part of its ongoing restructuring, has confirmed plans to reduce staff in the US and Europe.
Company President Takashi Kiryu told employees that layoffs would affect the publishing, IT and Square Enix Collective (developing indie games) departments. And it's the indie games that were in development that are being threatened, if not already cancelled.
The layoffs are part of the company's new mid-term business plan to make its AAA games multi-platform in the future. The plan, dubbed “Square Enix Reboots and Awakens” by the publisher, outlines a strategy for the next three years aimed at “long-term growth.”
One of the four pillars of the plan will be the transition to a multi-platform market. So, we can expect that not only new but also old games – such as Final Fantasy 7 Remake and possibly Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth – will appear on PC, Microsoft and Nintendo consoles.
Details about the extent of the layoffs have not been disclosed.
