Some activists speak out against toxicity and try to shut up people who are labeled as toxic. It looks like it will be difficult to eradicate it
Scientists have noticed that discussions on various platforms invariably lead to so-called toxicity. They analyzed more than 500 million comments over 34 years.
They found that the longer an online conversation goes on, the more likely it is to become toxic.
According to the study presented in Nature, the occurrence of toxicity is not related to any specific topic of discussion, nor does it depend on the historical context when the communication occurs, or the chosen platform.
This suggests that as discussions drag on, they tend to devolve into more polarized and hostile exchanges:
“…there are inherent aspects of online interaction that contribute to toxicity.”
