On the eve of its press conference at CES 2024, Samsung shared information about its new television line. The new 8K TVs have new AI-powered features, including upscaling technology (to help with the shortage of 8K content), and the company has unveiled a “glare-free” OLED model that should look equally sharp in both bright and dark rooms.
Samsung's new quantum dot TVs feature AI-powered upscaling technology that the company hopes will encourage curious consumers to pay more for 8K TVs, Engadget reports. Since most content providers do not have their own 8K streaming options, Samsung's AI Upscaling Pro feature on QN900D TVs (65 to 85 inches) can help by converting 4K content to 8K or HD/SD media to 4K.
The company says the QN900D is “the thinnest and most premium 8K TV ever to hit the market.” In addition to increasing resolution, the TV has recognition functions, such as helping you track a ball on the screen. Another algorithmic feature, Real Depth Enhancer Pro, helps increase the contrast between the foreground and background, including when viewing dynamic content such as car racing.
Samsung's new QLED (8K and 4K) and OLED TVs also come with Active Voice Amplifier Pro, an enhanced version of the existing feature that can enhance dialogue and key sound effects. In addition, the AI setting mode prompts you to select the “desired picture” in a series of scenes when setting up the TV; the TV will then use AI to detect the scene you're watching and optimize the picture to suit your preferences.
The company is also launching a (likely cheaper) 8K QLED TV, the QN85D, without fancy AI conversion features. Meanwhile, the company's lineup of 4K NEO QLED TVs includes the QN90D (43 to 98 inches) and QN85D (55 to 85 inches).
Samsung also unveiled new OLED models for 2024, including the S90D and S95D (both 55 to 77 inches). The latter includes glare-free OLED technology, which the company claims will allow “a better viewing experience in both bright and dark rooms.” Samsung says this feature does not affect viewing angles or image contrast and can display standard Pantone colors. The S95D has a 4K 144Hz panel that's just under 11mm thick.

The company's 2024 offerings also include “more ultra-large screen options than ever,” including 98-inch models in the Neo QLED 8K and 4K, QLED 4K and Crystal UHD lineups. Another AI-powered feature will solve the problem that pixels become more visible as screen size increases. Samsung's Supersize Picture Enhancer uses AI to sharpen images and reduce visible noise at every pixel to compensate for larger dots on larger TVs.
