Tests of the Arktika-M satellite No. 2 have been completed, it has been put into operation
According to the press service of Roscosmos, today, April 27, the state commission reviewed the results of flight tests of the spacecraft «Arktika-M» No. 2. Rocket with hydrometeorological satellite «Arktika-M» No. 2 launched from Baikonur on December 16 last year. And in mid-January of this year, the satellite sent the first images of the Arctic region and surrounding areas.
The State Commission decided to complete tests and put into operation the spacecraft «Arktika-M» No. 2. Now two satellites — «Arctic-M» No. 2 and «Arctic-M» No. 1, which was launched into orbit back in February 2021, — constitute the world's first hydrometeorological space observation system for the Arctic region of the Earth and adjacent territories, as stated by Roscosmos.
Two spacecraft provide round-the-clock monitoring of the surface and cloudiness of the Earth and seas in the Arctic region and adjacent territories, as well as the constant exchange of meteorological information. Satellites can also determine the location of ships, aircraft and other mobile objects in distress as part of the international search and rescue system COSPAS-SARSAT.
