The technology allows you to remove ice from the engine blades right in flight
Specialists from the Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNRPU) have developed a method for laser removal of ice from the fan blades of an aircraft engine during flight. According to the creators, their solution will reduce the risk of plane crashes.
Under the influence of heating and rotation, the processes of melting and the formation of cracks in the ice layer are started, and it comes off the blades. In this case, the ice is destroyed almost equally on each blade, which allows not only to clean the structural elements, but can also prevent vibrations, PNIPU said.
Scientists believe that the new development could become an alternative to the built-in thermal systems used in aviation, which only partially heat parts susceptible to icing. The authors have already received a patent for their development.
