The Russian complex with the BREST-OD-300 fast neutron reactor has no analogues in the world
Rostechnadzor issued a license to the Siberian Chemical Combine (JSC «SKhK», part of Rosatom) to operate a nuclear installation of a module for the production of fuel for «the reactor of the future» BREST-OD-300. This module is part of the Experimental Demonstration Energy Complex (ODEC), which is being built at the site of JSC «SKhK» in Seversk.
ODEK — this is a cluster of nuclear technologies of the future, which includes three interconnected objects: a module for the production (fabrication/refabrication) of mixed nitride uranium-plutonium nuclear fuel, a power unit with an innovative fast neutron reactor BREST-OD-300, and a module for reprocessing irradiated fuel. Thus, for the first time in world practice, nuclear power plants with «fast» will be built on one site. reactor and on-site closed nuclear fuel cycle, Rosatom said.
Rosatom began testing equipment for the production of innovative nuclear fuel on March 25, 2024. Obtaining a license from Rostechnadzor will allow us to move on to the next stage of testing: it will be possible to conduct comprehensive tests of the equipment of all production sections of the complete production chain of BREST-OD-300 fuel assemblies using depleted uranium.
For «quick» At the BREST-OD-300 reactor, Rosatom developed an innovative mixed dense nitride uranium-plutonium fuel. It is based on two key components – depleted uranium and plutonium extracted from irradiated nuclear fuel. The production and implementation of such fuel will make it possible to increase the resource of nuclear power plants, utilize accumulated reserves of depleted uranium, recycle irradiated elements to produce fresh fuel instead of storing them, and also radically reduce the formation of nuclear waste and its activity.
