Ovrdrive USB is a flash drive for security fans that has a prepared physical self-destruct function

But to fully implement it you need to modify it yourself

A campaign to raise funds for an unusual Ovrdrive USB flash drive has started on the Crowd Supply crowdfunding platform. It stands out for its unusual implementation of data protection with the potential for integrating self-destruction technology.

The product is an open source project, so you can customize it if you wish. By default, this is just an 8 GB flash drive, which has a very unusual implementation of data protection. There is no automatic encryption feature, as this is prohibited in some countries. But there is a physical condition under which it is possible to access the data. If you simply insert a flash drive into your PC, it will appear empty. To access the data, you need to quickly connect and disconnect the drive three times in a row. The developers say they are targeting their product at journalists working in hostile environments, security researchers and anyone interested in open source hardware.

But the self-destruct function is more interesting. It was originally planned, but then it was abandoned due to its complexity. However, the authors left the device in such a form that technically everything is ready to implement this very function. Ovrdrive includes circuitry that can invert the voltage supply to the memory chip, which heats it to temperatures in excess of 100°C. True, this is probably not enough to destroy the microcircuit, but the authors note that this temperature is enough to serve as a catalyst for any self-destructing implant that the user himself integrates into the device. All this is possible since the project is open source.

Currently, as part of the campaign, you can order a flash drive for $69. Deliveries are promised in August.
