Nvidia is stepping on the same rake again? G-Sync Pulsar technology has been introduced, but to implement it, monitors must have a special Nvidia chip

G-Sync Pulsar combines G-Sync and ULMB 2

Nvidia presented at CES 2024 a new stage in the development of G-Sync technology — G-Sync Pulsar.

It seems that under the new name the «old» technologies: actually, G-Sync itself, that is, the monitor’s variable adaptive frame rate, and Ultra Low Motion Blur 2 (ULMB 2). Of course, the latter cannot be called old, because it debuted only at the end of spring, and the first monitors appeared on the market just a few months ago.

So, G-Sync Pulsar combines the adaptive frame rate technology of the monitor, which has long been familiar, and what Nvidia itself calls backlight strobing technology. The monitor's backlight turns on only when each pixel has the correct color value. The idea is to not show the transition of pixels, but to only show them when their color is accurate. To solve the problems that arise with this approach, Nvidia figured out how to control the response time depending on where the vertical scan is located. Nvidia calls this “vertical dependent overdrive.”

Result — a new indicator of “motion clarity”, expressed in hertz. For the first monitors with ULMB 2 it is stated to be 1000 Hz or more.

Apparently, to implement G-Sync Pulsar you need a proprietary Nvidia chip — just like in the early days of G-Sync. Let us remember that in the end, Nvidia technology actually lost to the open standard AMD FreeSync.

The first monitor to support Pulsar will be the Asus ROG Swift PG27, which will be released later this year.
