Qualcomm accused of presenting misleading test results for new Snapdragon processors for Windows laptops X Elite and Plus. These chips are positioned as the first potentially competitive Windows on Arm processors compared to products from Apple, Intel and AMD. However, the SemiAccurate website claims that Qualcomm and its partners did not actually achieve the test results that were presented to the press.
Qualcomm sources indicate that at least two major OEMs were unable to replicate the test results provided by Qualcomm in their devices. The company has not yet commented on the situation when asked by the site.
At the Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit conference, the public saw the first tests of future X Elite processors. Their results, which sources said were “clean,” were worse than expected. Qualcomm claims that the software used was not the final version. Also, the tests were a complete black box—no one at the conference could see the settings that were used for testing, and the vague charts showing performance compared to Apple and Intel competitors could not be verified.
Once OEMs received the X-series processors, sources say none of them were able to replicate Qualcomm's advertised benchmark results. In fact, OEMs saw numbers that were “much less than 50%” of the results reported by Qualcomm. Allegedly, Qualcomm engineers reported that the situation is to blame for the poor optimization of Windows for Arm and poor cooling of laptops. Even after some time had passed and cooling could be improved, testers didn't come close to Qualcomm's benchmarks. One source compared the Snapdragon X Elite with Intel Celeron processors.
At the Snapdragon Summit, the company avoided answering technical questions about its upcoming X series and promised more answers and detailed technical briefings before the release of its chips. Reviewers were also promised the opportunity to test the processors themselves before release. So far, none of these promises have come to fruition – although there is still time until the chips launch in mid-2024. The press was able to test the devices at hands-on events, but all software was pre-installed and configured.
The information Qualcomm released yesterday does not contain deep technical data: the company talks about potential camera specifications, etc., without providing enough in-depth technical information. The number of cores, cache size, clock speed are known, but nothing goes deeper than the specifications.

Before the laptops are released, it is difficult to find confirmation of these accusations or Qualcomm's words. Microsoft is expected to make announcements regarding Windows on Arm at the Build developer conference in May, which could shed more light on this issue.
