A few months after Intel CEO announced plans to implement artificial intelligence into “every product”, there is a clearer idea of where it will start. The company announced an AI-focused chip for the automotive sector, or as Intel describes it, “the first generation of software-defined automotive system-on-a-chip with advanced AI capabilities.” Intel also announced the acquisition of an energy management company and new efforts to standardize battery power for electric vehicles.
Intel was playing catch-up in the race with Nvidia and AMD for the market for processors and other hardware needed for the AI boom. Now she has switched to computers with artificial intelligence, arguing that AI is safer to run on a personal computer rather than over the Internet, reports The Verge.
Companies are also competing in the automotive sector, fueled by the belief that the car is the next big software platform. According to Jack West, vice president and general manager of Intel Automotive, Intel's new automotive chips are designed to improve features such as navigation, voice assistants and vehicle control.
The first company to sign up to install these chips in their cars was Zeekr, an electric car sub-brand of the Chinese company Geely (which is the parent company of Volvo). The first Zeekr car equipped with Intel AI hardware will be released later this year.
We are bringing an artificial intelligence computer to the car. However, we can't just put a computer in a car. We know that automakers must be able to redesign their vehicle to be software defined.
– West at the briefing.
The company intends to introduce a family of systems on a chip (SoC) for these future software-defined vehicles (SDVs), the first of which will be released in late 2024. Intel did not name any other automotive customers other than Zeekr, but said it is in active discussions with a number of OEMs.

Intel says its SoCs are used in 50 million vehicles on the road, powering infotainment displays and instrument panels. Starting with Zeekr, the company will prove to selected auto companies that its AI chips can help usher in a new era of software-controlled vehicles.
