CES 2024 Intel announced Arrow Lake desktop and Lunar processors Lake for laptops will hit the market in the second half of 2024. Michelle Johnston Holthaus, Intel's executive vice president, says the company is already “deep and late” in introducing the new processors.
Arrow Lake will bring Intel Core Ultra architecture to the high-end desktop segment. “This will be the first PC gaming processor with AI capabilities.” AMD, which just released Ryzen chips with AI acceleration capabilities, would disagree with this statement. Intel has also adopted AMD's approach, when the new architecture is first implemented in laptops and only then presented on desktops.
In turn, Lunar Lake will appear in laptops. This processor features a “radical new low-power architecture and significant IPC improvements” as well as three times faster AI performance on both the GPU and NPU compared to Meteor Lake. These chips are now being shipped to Intel partners.
Michelle Holthaus showed off the Lunar Lake chip. The main core appears to be made up of three smaller ones, and there are also chips on the board that look like onboard RAM. Interestingly, a video with a similar chip previously appeared online, but was removed by Intel.
The company did not disclose any technical details of the new processors. It is unofficially known that the 4+4-core Lunar Lake CPU uses Memory on Package (MoP) with fast LPDDR5X-8533 memory. Probably these are two chips of 8 GB or 16 GB. It is expected that in addition to separating desktop and laptop processors into two different architectures, Intel will also introduce a division into powerful and weaker energy-efficient processors.
