Guilty Gear director Ishiwatari says studios need to fail

Japanese magazine Famitsu ushered in 2024 by sharing messages from 163 game developers about their plans and asking them to reflect on the previous year's achievements.

Daisuke Ishiwatari, General Manager of the Guilty Gear series, spoke in detail about the direction Arc System Works will be heading in the coming year. He expressed concern about the way things are in the game development industry and believes that there should be room for new indie developers to become relevant in the market – they should be given the opportunity to fail and grow.

As part of his statement, Ishiwatari noted:

“To sum it up, we live in an era where failure is this is not an option… Young people who aspire to become game developers are missing out on the opportunity to develop their creativity.”

Ishiwatari said the key words for the video game industry in 2024 were “core markets,” “indie,” “corporate development schemes,” and “compliance.” The keywords for his own goals in Arc System Works are “challenge”, “innovation”, “return” and “dawn”.
