Google's policy on repairing Pixel devices came under fire when it was noted that the company will not return the device to the owner if it contains “unauthorized parts.” Now the company promises to remove this restriction from its rules.
YouTube creator, repair shop owner, and rights-to-repair activist Louis Rossman this week called attention to Google's policy on repairing Pixel devices. Since at least last year, the support page that explains Google's repair policy has explicitly stated that if a device is sent in for repair and “unauthorized” aftermarket parts are found on it, the device “will not be returned” to its owner .
Recall that Samsung recently came under criticism for a similar approach. The Korean company required contracts to be signed that required repair shops to destroy devices found to contain non-original parts. iFixit recently ended its partnership with Samsung for Galaxy devices.
Google's policy only covers the company's own repairs of Pixel devices, but it similarly states that a device found to use aftermarket components “will not be returned to you.” This policy is effective July 19, 2023.
However, Google told Android Authority that it would change its position. In the future, Google will “not stock” a device if it contains non-original parts, and will return the device to the customer if it cannot repair it due to “security issues.”
“In this case, we will send it back to the client or work with him to determine next steps. Customers are also free to search for repair options that suit them best,” promises Google.

The company's terms of use will be updated to “clarify” this. However, these promises have not yet been fixed in the Rules update.
