Last year, Google added its latest big language model to the chatbot Bard (and even plans to rename it accordingly), and is now integrating Gemini into its virtual assistant.
The updated Google Assistant will reportedly understand text, images and audio. You can, for example, upload a photo of a plant and the assistant will provide recommendations on its care and the like.
You can still call it by pressing the power key or asking “Hey Google” (depending on the device).
“You can create a caption based on the generated image or find out more information about the article you are reading,” says Sissy Xiao, vice president of Google Assistant.
Like Bard, Assistant can generate text or images on demand. At the same time, in the settings you can easily disable generative functions and return to the old version of the assistant.
The free Gemini-based assistant uses the less powerful Gemini Pro, while Gemini Ultra is available in the Gemini Advanced subscription, which is part of Google's new One AI Premium subscription priced at $20 per month. The plan provides 2 TB of storage, and in the near future – Gemini features in Gmail, Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Sheets and the like.
Google Assistant powered by Gemini is available in English starting today in the US, and will roll out to select other countries starting next week.
