GOG has a competitive advantage over Steam. The library of games can be inherited by other users

Many users have accumulated an extensive library of digital products, and are now thinking about their future fate when they can no longer manage their account independently

Recently, the Steam community was actively discussing the support response – one gamer thought about death and decided to find out how the service could transfer the collection to other users.

A Valve representative made it clear that it would not be possible to “transfer the account by inheritance” (although some Americans have a different opinion – they think that in their case the legislation will still allow access to the account to be transferred as a “digital asset”).

Respawnfirst asked how things are going with the account transfer in the GOG service. They made a corresponding request and received an answer – in general, this is possible:

«GOG does not collect information sufficient to reliably identify a specific person (for example, first and last name), family or marital status. For this reason, we cannot determine that anyone is related to a specific user or that a specific user has passed away.

As a general rule, your GOG account and GOG content are not transferable. However, if you can get a copy of the court order that gives you the right to get your GOG account… we will do our best to make that happen.

We are ready to resolve such situations and preserve your GOG library, but currently we need the help of the judicial system.

It's worth noting, however, that GOG game builds are DRM-free, and offline installers are included with every purchase – so if anyone wants to save their offline games, for example, on an external hard drive disk, they will be saved regardless of the account owner“.
