In March, YouTube began testing the new Jump ahead feature, and now it has become available to a wider range of users through the section youtube.com/new. It is available for subscribers of the Premium version of the service.
Jump ahead is an artificial intelligence-based feature that allows you to speed up the viewing of long videos by skipping uninteresting and boring parts. To use this feature, you need to double-tap the screen, similar to the forward command. A new button will then appear that will “take you forward to where most viewers would normally go.” A pill-shaped Jump ahead button appears for a few seconds in the lower right corner and then disappears if the user simply wants to jump forward 10 seconds in the video.
By tapping the button, you'll see an overlay that says “Skip Over an Often Skip Section,” labeled YouTube Premium. YouTube uses artificial intelligence and viewership data to determine the “next best spot” for viewing. Thanks to the history of video viewing by other users, the service determines the fragments that aroused the greatest interest and which were usually skipped. Jump ahead allows you to immediately fast forward an uninteresting fragment and move on to an interesting one.
Available to YouTube Premium subscribers on the Android mobile app in the US. To activate it, you need to go to Settings > Try new experimental features. Currently, the function only works for videos in English, but it is “not available for every video” and requires the video to have a large number of views. The experiment is expected to last until June 1.
