Tesla takes seventh place
In March this year, BYD continued to maintain its leading position as the best-selling brand in retail sales, with 260,300 vehicles sold. Three other independent Chinese brands, including Geely, Changan and Chery, made it into the top 10.
China sold 1.690 million passenger cars in March, up 6.2% year-on-year and 53.1% month-on-month, resulting in first-quarter sales of a total of 4.829 million vehicles. According to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), the annual growth rate was 13.1%. Among them, sales of sedans amounted to 780,000 units, an increase of 2.4% year-on-year. The number of minivans amounted to 94,000 units, which is 5.6% less than last year. Crossover and SUV sales totaled 816,000 units, up 11.8% year-on-year.
New energy vehicle (NEV) sales totaled 709,000, up 29.5% year-over-year and up 82.5% month-on-month. At the same time, 120,000 NEVs were exported, up 70.9% year-on-year and up 52.8% month-on-month.
In March, BYD Qin Plus DM-i became the best-selling NEV sedan with 50,394 units sold. Tesla Model Y was the best-selling NEV crossover with 47,917 units sold. The Denza D9 became the best-selling NEV minivan with 10,036 units sold.

It is also worth noting that the NEV penetration rate in the Chinese market reached 41.6% in March.
