Autonomous (self-driving) cars could appear on some British roads before 2026, Transport Secretary Mark Harper said.

Fully self-driving cars are not yet legal on British roads, but government legislation on automated vehicles (AVs) is making its way through Parliament, meaning the legal framework for them must be in place before the end of 2024 , reports Reuters.

It's likely that by 2026, people will begin to see some elements of fully self-driving cars. It will be gradual… so there will be companies that will roll it out for use in specific locations.

– Mark Harper.

Critics of the technology, which has been tested in the United States, say the cars can cause accidents, and in California, regulators ordered General Motors' self-driving car unit Cruise to remove its cars from the state's roads after an accident in October.
