Apple will receive improved 3nm chips this year
According to DigiTimes, production of next-generation 2nm SoCs designed for future Apple devices is set to begin next year.
TSMC chip manufacturing plants will begin installing equipment designed for the production of 2nm chips no earlier than April. Apple was the first company to use TSMC's 3nm technology in the Apple A17 Pro chips for iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The company, according to DigiTimes, will follow suit with 2nm chips made by TSMC. Production will begin in 2025, with 2nm chips appearing in Apple devices for the first time shortly thereafter.
Last month, the Financial Times reported that TSMC had already shown prototypes of 2nm chips to Apple ahead of their expected release in 2025. Allegedly, Apple is working closely with TSMC in the race to develop and implement 2nm chip technology that will surpass their current 3nm technology and associated nodes in terms of transistor density, performance and efficiency.
DigiTimes added that the chip supplier is also assessing which of its factories will be the first to produce even more advanced 1.4nm chips in 2027. The company has begun mass production using improved 3nm technology, such SoCs will appear in Apple devices this year.
