Xbox Cloud Gaming is a service that allows you to play Xbox games in the cloud on various devices through an application or web browser. But iOS users cannot use the option due to Apple's ban.
Changes imposed by the European Union (Digital Markets Act) have given hope that the company will allow Xbox Cloud Gaming, as the requirements for apps for streaming games on iOS have been relaxed. Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, explained why this won't happen and what he plans to do.
According to Spencer, Apple has set too strict rules for game streaming apps that allow Microsoft to monetize Xbox Cloud Gaming for iOS.
“The proposal that Apple has put forward – and I think Sarah Bond's comments on this were accurate – does not go far enough to open competition. In some ways you could even say they're going in the opposite direction, but they certainly don't go far enough to open up competition on the world's largest gaming platform.”
Spencer added that Microsoft would like to open an Xbox store on mobile devices with Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Game Pass games, but that is not the only goal.
“Our goal is not for everyone to be a Game Pass subscriber. I've said many times that maybe 10-15% of service revenue is subscription revenue. It's good business for us at the moment, but by no means are we thinking, “Everyone should be a Game Pass subscriber.” We don't want to focus just on Game Pass. We have to think about the health of the entire Xbox business.”
