Meta's supervisory board decided that the video can remain on Facebook, but requires from the company to update its “inconsistent” policies.
The original video showed footage from October 2022, where the US President accompanies his granddaughter to the first vote and puts a sticker on her clothes with the inscription “I voted.” One Facebook user subsequently added an edited version of Joe Biden allegedly touching the girl's breasts several times. In the description of the video, the US President was called a “sick pedophile” and those who voted for him were called “mentally ill.”
As Engadget reports, Meta's Oversight Board, which reviewed the incident, recently decided that the Facebook video could remain. The report says it does not violate the company's media manipulation policies because it “was not edited using artificial intelligence tools and because the editing was obvious and unlikely to mislead most users.”
At the same time, the oversight board is concerned specifically with the content of Meta's policy, which, in their opinion, is “inconsistent, lacks compelling justification, and inappropriately focuses on how the content was created rather than on what specific harm must be prevented (for example, regarding electoral processes).
“Meta should urgently reconsider this policy given the large number of electoral processes in 2024.”
The advice also suggests that Meta “apply a label indicating that the content is multi-layered and may be misleading.” The company now says it is “reviewing the guidance from the Supervisory Board and will provide a public response” within the next 60 days.
With regards to Facebook moderation, questions arise regularly, including from Ukrainian users, who are often blocked for disseminating information about the war.
